pair of design dons have worked up renders of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 based on Samsung patents, giving hungry tech fans a tantalising look at the devices that might land later this year.

Jermaine Smit’s rather lovely take on the blue edition of the Galaxy Note 4 ditches plastic for a metal construction, in line with said leaked filing and with months of rumours around Samsung’s plans to improve the build quality of its top-end Galaxy smartphones.

And there’s a spec sheet that more matches the costly shell too. As well as a 20-megapixel rear-facing snapper, the what-if edition of the Note 4 is home to a 5.9-inch edge-to-edge screen and a gym-honed Exynos S+ processor.

The concept phone version of the Galaxy S5 comes to us courtesy of Ivo Maric.

Adhering fast to the leaked filing, he’s imagined a handset broadly in line with the current-gen Galaxy S5 but with an edge-to-edge screen that curves to the right and virtual, on-screen pressers rather than physical buttons.

A metallic frame is also in evidence and looks like a welcome change, as does the leatherette finish on the rear in the style of the Galaxy Note 3.

How far the patents, and the concepts phones derived from them, will reflect the finished models of Samsung’s next smarties is a moot point.

As far as the Galaxy S5 goes, we shouldn’t have too long to find out, though. It’s due to land in March or April. But might even tip up slightly earlier if rumours can be believed.

The Note 4, however, isn’t due until November or so, in keeping with Samsung’s set-in-stone refresh program.
